Design Technology - Making Salads
May 2023
Year 1 pupils planned, made, and evaluated both fruit and vegetable salads. This project helped them develop creativity, fine motor skills, and a taste for healthy eating. They actively participated in the entire process, from planning to evaluation, fostering autonomy and critical thinking. Our teachers guided them in exploring different ingredients, teaching kitchen skills, and encouraging reflection and improvement. This project not only enhanced their design and technology abilities but also promoted a deeper understanding of nutritious food choices.
Science Experiment
April 2023
Year 1 explored the essential requirements for plant growth. They observed cress seeds under different conditions, learning about the importance of sunlight, water, and nutrients. This hands-on experiment fostered scientific inquiry and a deeper appreciation for plants.
Chirk Castle
April 2023
Year 1 children had a great day out at Chirk Castle to extend their history learning of castles and science learning about plants. They explored castle life in the medieval era including the dungeons and the servants hall and were able to try on a range of armour. The had great fun acting out the use of the stocks. The children appreciated the beauty of the gardens and identified some plants and flowers.
Design Technology - Rockets

In design technology the year 1 children planned, made and evaluated their own rockets.
Making a Christmas Cake
November/December 2022
Year 1 children enjoyed making a Christmas Cake to share with their family. Mrs Taylor helped them with each stage of the 4 week process, from mixing the ingredients, rolling out and positioning the marzipan, rolling out and putting on the icing and finally decorating the cake. What a special treat for Christmas!
History of Toys
November 2022
This half term Year 1 children have been exploring the changes in toys over the last 180 years. They explored their own toys, what they looked like and what they were made from and then found out about their parents and grandparents toys when they were younger. The children played with real early 20th century and Victorian Toys. They developed their sense of chronology by ordering toys on a timeline.
Reading Buddies
October 2022
One of the highlights of the week for Reception and Year 1 children is on Friday morning's when pupils from Year 8 come and share stories with them. It has been lovely to see the positive relationships develop between the pupils.
Autumn Explorers
October 2022
Year 1 used their five senses to explore the signs of Autumn in our school grounds today. They particularly enjoyed hearing the rustling and crunching sounds as they kicked the leaves and tasting a crisp and sweet Autumn apple. The children thought of interesting adjectives to describe the signs of Autumn that they experienced with their senses. They used these 'Wow' words to write some fantastic Autumn Poems.
Art
September and October 2022
Year 1 have been exploring the seasons and weather through their artwork this half term. They produced some fun busy summer seaside pictures in the style of Janet Bell, using paint and collage materials. Their Autumn trees were created using a finger printing technique. Each child took part in a group rainbow project using rollers to create a large rainbow for their Noah's Ark display and used collage to create the animals They also made individual rainbow mobiles with some of God's promises written on the clouds.
